O R Tambo International Airport, formerly Johannesburg International, the biggest and busiest airport on the African continent, roughly sees about 13 million passengers passing its gates per annum. More than a million are business travellers. Some 300 000 tons of cargo are handled by the cargo sections of numerous freight importers and exporters. More than 18 000 people work at the airport of which a large number live in nearby Kempton Park. Over 50 airlines are currently serving the airport. The recently completely overhauled airport building is owned and managed by ACSA (Airports Company of South Africa).

The airfield's apron at has also been upgraded to provide dual taxiways and six more remote aircraft stands. A 200m pier provides five extra contact stands, allowing passengers to walk directly from the terminal on to the aircraft.
Departure from the airport
Departing from the new multi storey parking garage at the airport, one has only three choices in directions. The R 24 will lead you to Johannesburg, while the R 21 will take you either to Boksburg (S) or Pretoria (N). The obvious choice after a long flight would be a stayover at Chamonix Guest Lodge just 8 km north on the R 21 towards Pretoria (see map)
